VIDEO: Cork City vs Dundalk President’s Cup thriller the perfect seat-warmer for 2018 season

The 2018 League of Ireland season gets under way on Friday and what better way to whet your appetite than to watch the top two teams – Cork City and Dundalk – battle it out in the curtain-raiser?

Unless you were paying attention, you might have missed the fact that the President’s Cup took place last Sunday. It wasn’t broadcast live on television and, as Cork City boss John Caulfield noted, merited only four seconds on RTÉ’s sports bulletin that evening.

Luckily, Dundalk’s in-house media service DFCTV shared highlights of the game on Youtube, otherwise the casual fan would have been deprived of the pleasure.

There were six goals in the game at Oriel Park, with Cork City staging an impressive second-half comeback after going 2-0 down to their familiar foes. New Lilywhites signing Ronan Murray bagged a double, before City struck back through Karl Sheppard, Barry McNamee, Kieran Sadlier and Graham Cummins to win 4-2.

Sadlier’s goal, in particular, was exactly the reason why the game should have been broadcast live, or at the very least promoted online.  You can check it out, along with the other five goals in the video below.

If that doesn’t float your boat, the best goals scored in 2017 ought to do the trick. Enjoy!
