UEFA U17 Championship: Ireland ‘can’t wait’ for crunch Germany clash

IRELAND take on Germany on Wednesday knowing that a win could see them through to the knockout stage of the Uefa Under-17 Championship in Croatia.

The young Boys in Green got the tournament off to a bad start with a loss against Serbia, but kept their tournament hopes alive with a hard-fought victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Sunday. They currently sit third in Group C, level with Bosnia on three points after two games.

Goals from Rowan Roache and Adam Idah were enough for Colin O’Brien’s side against the Bosnians, and they will aim to bring confidence from the win into their clash against a team containing starlets from Bayern Munich and Red Bull Leipzig, as well as a red-hot Hamburg striker in Jann-Fiete Arp, who has been linked with Chelsea.

“I can’t wait. I really can’t,” said Ireland coach Colin O’Brien after his side’s victory against Bosnia.

“Germany are a top footballing nation with quality players but we have some great qualities in our squad too. We’ll prepare for them now and look forward to Wednesday.”
