Derry City surprised many in 2016 when they navigated their way to a third-place finish in the Premier Division under new manager Kenny Shiels.
Under the former Kilmarnock boss, a number of young, local players came of age as the Candystripes defied expectations in the league, while contriving to play an attractive brand of football.
One of those youngsters was forward Ronan Curtis, who scored six goals in 31 appearances in all competitions.
The 20-year-old’s form for Derry earned him international recognition in the form of call-ups to Noel King’s Republic of Ireland Under-21 squad and it should come as no surprise to learn that he has carried his confidence into 2017.
Curtis scored the only goal of the game as Shiels’ side defeated NIFL outfit Coleraine in their final pre-season friendly ahead of the new League of Ireland campaign and it was a brilliant header.
