John Egan showed Brentford boss Dean Smith exactly why he deserves to be in the team with a decisive contribution in his side’s win over promotion contenders Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old gave the Bees the lead when he headed past compatriot Keiren Westwood early in the game and held firm to repel a Wednesday fight-back and bring an end to a winless streak that had stretched to three games.
Prior to the game at Hillsborough, Egan had been relegated to the bench for Brentford’s previous four games, with his last appearance coming in the hefty FA Cup defeat to Chelsea on January 28.
“I brought John Egan back today and he has come up trumps with a great header,” Bees boss Smith told the club’s official website. “We know that he has got goals in him and Harlee Dean has added goals to his game as well.
“I thought they were magnificent heading the ball in both boxes. That was important as they threw everything at us in the last 15 minutes.”
The goal was Egan’s fourth in 28 Championship appearances for Brentford this season and the Cork native will be hopeful that he has done enough to regain his place with Martin O’Neill set to finalise his Ireland squad in the coming weeks.
