As far as debuts go, Graham Burke’s was one to remember, but unfortunately for the wrong reasons.
In the space of three minutes, Burke experienced the euphoric high of scoring a goal on his first appearance for Shamrock Rovers and the embarrassing low of being sent off for a ridiculous challenge.
With his side trailing by two goals on the opening game of the season, the former Aston Villa starlet pulled one back with a deflected finish, but then, absolute craziness unfolded.
After Jamie McGrath dropped to the ground in a tussle for possession, Burke inexplicably lunged into the Dundalk man while he was lying on the ground, imprinting his boots into the midfielder’s mid-section.
The reckless tackle sparked a mini-melee between the two teams and the 23-year-old could have no complaints when the referee produced an immediate red card.
Dundalk held on to get their title defence off to a winning start, thanks to goals in either half from Robbie Benson and Ciarán Kilduff.
